INTRODUCTION TO DSLR

So, you’ve got a new DSLR, or you’ve had one for awhile and aren’t sure how to use it? Still using Auto Mode? Do the buttons and dials on the camera seem daunting? Why aren’t my images in focus? Why are they so bright or so dark? If you’ve ever had questions like this, then this workshop is for you!

A mixture of in-class and field exercises, this workshop will help you understand the functions of your camera, as well as compositional techniques to use when out shooting. We will venture outdoors (weather depending) to put those functions and techniques into practice. After we’ve captured some images, we will head back for an introduction to post-processing, including how to properly import and apply an edit to your photos. See below for a detailed itinerary.

FEE

The cost of this workshop is $150 (plus Eventbrite fee).

If you would like to avoid paying the Eventbrite fee, alternative payment methods are available. Please contact aaron@aaronvonhagen.com if you have any questions!

ITINERARY – Saturday, January 27th

9am-12pm

Starting with in-class instruction, we will cover the main functions of your camera and explore the technical side with shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO. We will go through functions of gear, different types of lenses, and filters.

We will also delve into compositional techniques, which will hopefully help you to approach a scene with a different set of eyes, creating stronger images overall.

12pm-1pm

Lunch (not included)

1pm-3pm (approx)

With the lessons we learned before lunch, we will spend some time taking pictures and trying to put these techniques into practice. The emphasis here will be on learning how to use aperture to control focus, shutter speeds to either stop or convey motion, and how different ISO settings affect the light, and how all three of these settings work in conjunction.

330pm-5pm

We will return back to the classroom for a brief introduction to Lightroom. We will learn how to properly label, keyword, name, and set the destination of your photos before we import them to your computer. Instruction on how to perform a basic edit in Lightroom, such as cropping, colour toning, image sharpening, and straightening horizon lines will also be given. Then, we will learn how to take our images and export them in different formats, and to optimize them for sharing on social media with your friends and family.

LIGHTROOM BASICS

Have all these pictures and don’t know what to do with them? This workshop can help you with that! If you attended the Introduction to DSLR workshop the previous day, you’re slightly ahead of the game, however, this portion of the workshop will delve much deeper into the world that is Lightroom.

ITINERARY – Sunday, January 28th

9am-12pm

THE IMPORT DIALOGUE

We will start off the day at the beginning, from getting photos you’ve taken off your camera onto your computer. We will learn how to properly label, keyword, name, and set the write destination of your photos before starting the import process to your computer. We will discuss how generating previews will help speed up your editing process, and how to use Smart Previews if your main photo library is unavailable.

LIBRARY MODULE

We will also discuss how to make keywording, file naming, and folder structure changes to images you may have already imported into your library. We will discuss how to rate and flag images in order to help speed up the culling and editing process, so you can spend less time in front of a computer and more time behind your camera.

DEVELOP MODULE

After we learn to import our images with proper file structure, instruction on how to perform a basic edit in Lightroom, such as cropping, colour toning, image sharpening, and straightening horizon lines will also be given.

12-1pm

Lunch (not provided)

1pm-330pm

ADVANCED DEVELOP MODULE

Upon returning from lunch, we will discuss more advanced Lightroom techniques, such as the use and creation of custom presets, lens corrections, circular and gradient filters, and the adjustment brush. We will also discuss how to use the other modules available in Lightroom. To finish off, we will learn how to take our images and export them in different formats, and to optimize them for sharing on social media with your friends and family.

330pm-5pm

We will have an open editing session, where you will be able to work on importing and editing images you have taken, with the ability to ask for help and guidance while you do it.

FEE

The cost of this workshop is $150 (plus Eventbrite fee).

The cost to attend both workshops is $275 (plus Eventbrite fee).

If you would like to avoid paying the Eventbrite fee, alternative payment methods are available. Please contact aaron@aaronvonhagen.com if you have any questions!
